During the 10th to 12th centuries the peoples living on the two sides of the Pyrenees established close social, economic and cultural ties. These ties led to frequent journeys over the mountains and exchanges between the peoples in each of the territories with the consequent arrival of new ideas. One of the new movements was Catharism, which was gradually adopted by all social classes, from lords down to serfs. The crusade by Simón de Montfort to exterminate all followers of this religion, called bons homes (good men), forced the Cathars to flee over the mountains into Catalonia. This escape route is the origin of the Camí dels Bons Homes (the Route of the Good Men).
