The Alt Berguedà route

One of the geologically most complex parts of the pre-Pyrenees is the area referred to as Alt Berguedà, with the Catllaràs, Pedraforca, Ensija and Peguera mountain ranges. Historically one of the most ancient landscapes in Catalonia, the region is a joy to explore, given the surprising way rocks rise up from the substrate to form unusual landscapes and the remote hamlets and churches to be found in valleys and on rocky outcrops. The routes we propose for the week-long excursion lead us along the ancient pathways that linked up these villages. The route commences in Guardiola de Berguedà with an exploration of the central part of the foothills of the Cadí. We then describe a semi-circle that leads us first to the plateau of Vallcebre and then to the spectacular Pedraforca mountain. We then follow the Camí dels Bons Homes (the Route of the Good Men) in a southerly direction to Berga where we will spend the night. The last two days will be spent exploring the nearby Serra del Picancel and the Catllaràs mountain, reached from the town of Borredà.
